FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)

How can I become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?

Membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha is generally classified as undergraduate or graduate. Please log onto our International website: http://www.aka1908.com/present/membership/prospectivemembers/ for detailed information regarding prospective membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Is it expensive to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc?

Joining a sorority does carry a financial obligation. Each chapter is self-supporting through dues paid by their members. Although chapters may make accommodations for special needs, students should take into consideration the financial commitment that follows membership in a chapter. Every organization is not only looking for members who will join, but members who will remain "active" (financially supporting and working within a chapter) all their lives.

How many hours of community service should a person have?

Through the support of local and national philanthropies, sororities promote ideals that will enhance a member's holistic experience. Charities and service have long depended on the dedication and generous time contributed to the community by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, since its inception. There is no set number of community service hours any prospective candidate should have. Ideally, your community service should be something that you enjoy doing which, of course, will impact the community instrumentally in some way shape or form as you spend time doing something you enjoy!

How do I find out more information about the sorority?

The International website, http://www.aka1908.com, as well as our local chapter website is filled with a lot of helpful information pertaining to our programs, projects, initiatives and our history. The local chapter in your community can also share more information. There are also several published reading materials that might help you as well, such as:

  • Parker, Majorie (1979). Alpha Kappa Alpha: In the Eye of the Beholder.
  • Parker, Majorie (1999). Past is Prologue: The History of Alpha Kappa Alpha 1908-1999.
