Established in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women. The membership of Nu Iota Omega chapter consist of women who have chosen to give back to their communities through volunteer service.

We are proud to celebrate over thirty years of compassionate service to the residents of the Central Florida. Our significant chapter prides itself on demonstrated excellence. We are actively engaged in working with the community to implement programs tailored to provide Global Leadership through Timeless Service. We faithfully reach out and collaborate with the community to identify and address areas of concern locally, nationally and globally that align with our National Program initiatives: Emerging Young Leaders, Health, Economic Security, Global Poverty, Social Justice & Human Rights and Internal Leadership for External Service.

Ivy Tea Rose provides the members of Nu Iota Omega additional opportunities to support our community through grants and partnerships. We take special pride in our mentoring program, The Ivy Rosettes. The girls experience leadership tips, speaking opportunities as well as self-improvement ideas.

Nu Iota Omega Launches Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Program

Nu Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated completed two introductory workshops in preparation for launching its Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Program and we are now in full swing! Emerging Young Leaders Program is the signature program of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters everywhere will establish EYL Programs.

What is EYL you ask? EYL or Emerging Young Leaders is a program designed for middle school girls in grades 6th, 7th and 8th. The objective is to help alleviate problems concerning women and girls as they improve their social stature and help maintain a progressive interest in college life. Emerging Young Leaders Program embraces four AKAdemies:

  • Leadership Development
  • Educational Enrichment
  • Civic Engagement
  • Character Building

Young ladies interested in becoming a member of Nu Iota Omega Chapter's EYL Program need to know that we meet on the first Saturday of each month unless specifically notified. Our meeting dates are posted on our Events page. Meeting times are from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Winter Park Community Center, 721 W. New England Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789. Criteria for the program in addition to being in 6th, 7th and 8th grade is:

  • The applicant must be enrolled in school
  • The applicant has to submit a completed counselor / teacher recommendation form
  • The applicant must have a C+ grade point average or its equivalent and must show marked effort, improvement or success each grading period
  • The applicant will have to submit a typed personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) which articulates why she desires to be in the Emerging Young Leaders Program
  • The applicant must agree to follow instructions, cooperate and be well-behaved while participating in the program; and the applicant must submit a completed parental consent and release form.

An application must be submitted before a female student can participate in EYL. Applications may be downloaded from this website in two formats:

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African American college educated women. Nu Iota Omega was chartered 30 years ago in Maitland, Florida.
